The Health Insurance and Managed Care (B) Committee heard from stakeholders on air ambulance billing concerns during the NAIC's Summer 2016 National Meeting. Consumers in nearly every state have received critical, life-saving air transport to an emergency room or trauma center and then found out that the air ambulance carrier is not in their insurance network resulting in tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. State laws that would protect consumers in such cases are preempted by the Airline Deregulation Act.
The committee heard perspectives from Jeff Frazier from Sentinel Air Medical Alliance, Kim Holland from BlueCross and BlueShield Association and Mike Allen of Air Methods Corporation.
