2009 marks another successful conference!

The 10th Annual NAIC/NIPR E-Regulation Conference, April 27-29, 2009 at the Kansas City Westin Crown Center, was a success, with more than 550 insurance regulators and industry representatives attending.

The conference kicked off with a keynote panel discussion with NAIC President and New Hampshire Commissioner Roger Sevigny, Alaska Director Linda Hall, and Ohio Director Mary Jo Hudson, facilitated by NAIC Chief Operating Officer and Chief Legal Officer Andrew Beal. The keynote panel featured open dialogue, creating an opportunity for the participants to respond to questions about current economic crises, focusing on perceptions, facts, and membership positions about the shadow that has been cast on state-based insurance regulation and insurer financial stability as a result of upheaval in the financial services sector.

"State regulators have spent a great deal of time evaluating insurer solvency in light of recent events," commented Commissioner Sevigny. "And our findings underscore the strength of state-based insurance regulation as it is clear that the insurers are well capitalized and are in solid position to meet claims obligations. It is unfortunate that state-based insurance regulation has been identified as not working. It is true that insurers are not immune to the economic climate, but they are certainly not the cause of the current financial problems. A number of federal 'solutions' have been or will be proposed. We are working diligently with members of Congress to educate them on the strength and benefits of state insurance regulation, urging them not to create duplicative, unnecessary federal agencies to perform functions already working."

In addition, the members of the panel discussed key initiatives of the NAIC Membership such as the Producer Licensing Task Force and associated committees, the Speed to Market Task Force, and the Interstate Insurance Product Regulation Commission as well as modernization of market regulation and company licensing through policy changes, process revisions and technology.
